I'm having an extension built, the builders electrician just told me that because the meter is being moved, (to the front of the house as opposed to the side)the consumer unit wil have to be moved as well due to the fact that the meter tails can only be 1 metre. Is this true? or is he angling to make the job bigger than it should be? The distance between exsisting CU and his proposed new position is about 5 metres.
Any advice would be much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The length of the tails is down to the DNO, its common for them to allow 3m, but some don't place a restriction, speak to them

If you want to keep the CU where it is, you can, just put a switchfuse near the intake position, the tails protected by the DNO fuse end here, and you can run your own submain to the CU position and it can be as long as you like as long as you design it properly :)

I trust the building inspector is already involved in the project?

Cheers for the speedy reply, very interesting! i'll run it by him and see wot sort of face he pulls!! As regards the inspector yes he's involved, for wot he's worth!
Cheers

I suggest you get an electrician on board, chances are the building inspector will want to see an electrical cert (some of them will allow DIYs to avoid it as BS7671 isn't actually a legal requirement and maybe do a few tests themselves and look it over quickly to be happy that it meets P1, but it doesn't sound like yours will)

Again thanks for the reply, just out of interest do you have any idea how much an electrician is likely to charge to get the WHOLE property inspected and tested after the extension is complete? The property is or will be a typical 1930 semi with a fourth bedroom extension.
Just the standard electrical installation i.e ring upstairs and down, lighting cct upstairs and down- basically nothing fancy!!!!

Cheers
