Should edge of plaster board be at a joist?

I need to replace some plasterboard on the ceiling. There is a gap at present, I mean the plasterboard that is still affixed overhands the joist by about 7 or 8 inches (more or less in between joists).

Should I take the plasterboard back to the joist, or is it okay to leave the edge where it is? Thanks.

You can patch by screwing a piece of wood onto the existing ceiling. Just cut longer bits than the hole itself and by keeping it tight screw on edges. Then you have a new framework for a patch which can be attached to it. Of course the wooden piece would be on the inside part of the existing boarding.
