Should I rub down primer to smooth it.

I've primed a small cloakroom I've finished with wood linings. I was going to rub down with 300 grit paper I have that is Oakey paper and actually say for between coats on it. Is this ok or is primer supposed to be left course for the top coat to stick? If I make it glass smooth will that benefit my finish coats?

Yes waterbased. It's dulux trade quick dry primer undercoat. Top coat plan is two coats of dulux trade water based satin wood.

No need for glass smooth, just lightly de-nib it.

modern water-based paints don't sand well. they tend to come away in little rolls and balls of soft paint.

you can wipe the surface very lightly with a fine paper, not pressing, to remove flies and nibs.

I've just done exactly what your doing. Timber linings dulux trade quick dry primer. Oakey 320 grit white paper. Dulux trade quick dry satin wood. Same paper light scuff then a second top coat. Finish is amazing. I go in at nights and rub my hand across it, wife thinks I'm a loonatic. I think she's just jelous!

300-320 grit paper should be fine. get to 400+ grit and you risk "polishing" the surface, thereby inhibiting the ability of the next coat to key.

The type of paper is also important. I prefer using a sterate coated silicone carbide paper (National Abrasives). The sterate coating helps to reduce clogging.
