hi

I have just had my ceiling's done by the council and i'm not happy, i've got an inspector coming on thursday and i need advice.

The ceilings had to have new plasterboard fitted then plastered but its now been a week and i can see the outline of all the plasterboards, is this right? the plaster said it will go but i still can see them and i have a horrible feeling when i paint them i will see the plasterboard.

What can i say to the inspector without sounding stupid, i'm a single mum and i know they will tell me its fine, need urgent advice

if it was done within the last few days, it should dry out and go away, as long as when you run your hand over the line it is smooth and flat, then once painted you wont see them at all. its just either the plaster is a diff colour cos its thicker in the joints or the coat is a thin one. but dont panic. when new plaster looks awful the paint hides mostly everything unless its bumpy.

thanks there are bumps on the ceiling and a big plasterboard line right through the middle of the room. They were also supposed to fix the big dip in celing but still there.

oh do most plasterers ruin wall paper

thank you

did they replace full ceiling, or just section?? and good plasterers wouldnt ruin wallpaper (poor plasterers could)

if its really bumpy then a bad job ,the joints of plasterboard you can see should and the ceiling should be smooth? the dip in ceiling can only be rectified by fixing the dip , the new boards would just follow the old boards with same dip in. as for wallpaper , im afraid the answer is normally yes they do make a right mess, but it is a messy job. not all plasterers make a mess though , jut most of them lol.

they replaced the whole ceiling they were supposed to push the dip up and then plasterboard it and plaster i think i'll be having words on thursday. Their excuse was that the beam is think

sounds like a total rush job, hard to say exaxctly though. wasnt a friday afternoon by any chance..... and lets hope they used 12.5 boards

just about all council workers are multi traders as they are required to paint, cove, fix skirting, plumb, and plaster ect, very rarley is there a dedicated plasterer working for the council, most of the time all they have to do is patch, which is why you have ended up with a bad job, i was once subbed out to the council because the multi traders was making such a bad job with the plastering on kitchen refits that they decided that they had to get some plasterers in, and i left after a few days because i could see the corners being cut and i was skimming over bad work no job satisfaction at all, getting back to your ceiling if you can see the join running all the way across the ceiling then that means they dident stagger the joints so thats wrong for a start, is there a lip at this point ? can you feel it? and blaming the joist or beam is no good as this can be packed out
if i was you i would tell the inspector that they should have masked your wallpaper and that you want it replacing, also tell them that they havent boarded the ceiling properly, also its worth noting that council workers have time limits they have a list of jobs to do and your job will be on that list with an allocated time limit so they wouldent have had time to pack out and level the ceiling

well said m8 i subbed once and it was crap times skimming over artex and smashed up walls.
refits were ok all i was told all the time is get it done and get on.
******* but still i tryed my best to leave a god finish.
your right ther m8 most of them cant paint plaster or make tea but who gives a **** just pay your rent
id get them back in to fix it
or even better get 2/3 spreads in to price up the job agen then show the big dick of thursday are they ment to paint it too
dont even go there
your better off painting it your self trust me i kicked off proper wen they skimed a lid at my old flat and the painter was **** there was more paint on the walls not the lid (what a mess)not even a mist coat
stand your ground with them and as a warning i think most the ferms use laylend paints so if your wall paper isnt on the list your ******

You’ve been given a cheapskate job by folks who are not plasterers or if they are, know full well how to cut corners on prep & finish. The plaster skim is probably micro thin which is why you can see the line but if you cant feel a ridge it may be OK when painted but who knows how long it will last. Your big problem is that most landlords (social or otherwise) will always spend as little as possible to cure the immediate problem with little or no interest in your problems or how long the immediate fix will actually last

but still i tryed my best to leave a god finish.
Never tried praying at Multi before, does it work

:D :D

I have invoked teh Lord's name on occasion while skimming - does that count?

It sounds like a bad job.

If the gap between the boards was too wide, you'll see and feel a slight line at eh joints. These gaps needed to be filled before the two coats of finish.

If that's the only problem, a quick sand (and a maybe a bit of aimes) witll solve it. It sounds like more though.

The plasterer should not ruin the paper, but if he is skimming into wall paper the wet and teh trowel will damage it and it should be taken inot account befoer the job is done.

I've seen many a skimmed plasterboard wall, where the skim has been put on that thin, you not only see every line where the joints are, but you can also see the mesh tape itself showing through in places. It's enough to make the old plasterers from the past, turn in their graves.
