Shower Enclosures - Which Type?

Hi,

I am renovating my downstairs bathroom and want to put a new shower enclosure in. The width of the bathroom is roughly 1400mm. I was originally planning on putting a sliding door shower in but someone has told me that the slider action will stop working! Any suggestions as to what type of shower enclosure is best and what is a good brand to go for?

Also, does anyone know of any sites or shops that sell reasonably price counter top basin cabinets? I am based in Essex.
