Just looking into renovating the shower using 10mm panels instead of tiles. Is a base trim necessary or can the panels just be sealed along the bottom edge with sealant as with tiling?

Nope, not needed with tiles either TBH. Once the tiles are off, clean out as much old sealant at the wall/tray joint as you can back to clean silicone, clean with spirits and leave to air dry, then re-seal and square it flat to the top edge. Fit the wet board with a fillet of adhesive at every edge so when hung there will be a excess squeezed out along every edge. Wipe that back clean to the edge & then silicone along the new wall/tray joint.
