Shower problems

non return valves won't do nothing in your pipe install.
poss you have trapped air in the up over pipes from the pump.
air will only rise.

not always.
air can be caused by many factures, how the hots connected to the cylinder etc

pipe comes out of the top of the cylinder, I have tee'd off the main outlet, down to the pump. but i have no leaks, into or out of the pump on the pipework

how have you teed off the horizontal outlet from the cylinder ?
does the pipe tee underneath or the side or from the top ?

pipe comes out of top of cylinder, then horizontal to t piece, from t piece goes up to attic and down to feed domestic hot water, I have tee'd in on the horizontal piece before the original t piece, but as i say have had no problems before now

teeing off the horizontal should be teed from underneath to stop any air from cylinder going down in to pump feed.
otherwise when pump running and cylinder releases air it will take the first route instead of escaping up the vent.

not saying that is the cause but don't help if air traps in the feed to pump.
thats why its always best to fit a surrey flange.
