You need both. Is there enough slack to strip back the insulation and re-connect all 3 conductors?

Yes you definitely need both. One earth is from the shower another is from the consumer unit - if one isn't connected you have no earth at your shower, simple as.
If you haven't got enough slack you'll need to replace one of the runs of cable or extend the cable using a suitable junction box (60A minimum) but that isn't really a good solution.
