Hi,

What may seem a really silly question but here goes....

I am fitting a power shower pump and have given it an electricity feed (or will be). Can anyone tell me if the pumps are intelligent? By that I mean switching on and off themselves when they see the need to pump water?

Or, do I need to fit a seperate switch to turn the pump off when I turn the shower off.

I said it was a silly question - but thanks anyway.

a shower pump will operate when the water starts to flow from the shower by gravity which operates a flow switch in the pump and starts the pump running.

I guess it must be a cheap pump then - the diagram I have for wiring it up shows a pull switch that needs connecting.

Can anyone advise a shower pump that doesn't need a seperate on/off switch?

Cheers

Sounds like you've got a negative head pump there, not necessarily a cheap pump. It will work, but you will have to turn it on and off every time you have a shower.

They are usually only required where water won't flow to the shower head by gravity (e.g. where the cylinder's header tank is below the outlet of the shower, like a loft shower).

Where gravity will get the water to the shower head, a conventional pump will do as this will detect flow when you turn the shower on using a flow switch (built in) and activate the pump. When you turn the shower off the flow stops and so does the pump.

Could you elaborate a little on your set-up as that will help decide whether you should take the pump back or not.

could be that the wiring diagram is just indicating the need for electrical isolation of the pump for servicing etc. having said that I don't know what pump you've got...

eh..? negative head pumps I use operate via integral pressure switches..
