I am replacing the shower in our en-suite and am having a few problems with the drainage flow rate. I have raised the shower tray 150mm above the floor.

The shower tray is fitted with a shower trap and this connects to a 'u' trap which in turn connects to the soil pipe. The problem with this set up is that the water drains away very slowly. I have disconnected the 'u' trap and the water flows freely, indicating that the 'u' trap is impeded the flow. I've checked 'u' trap and it is not blocked.

Is the 'u' trap required ? I think it is, as the waste is connected to the soil pipe but would be grateful if someone could confirm this.

Could a HepvO valve be fitted instead of a 'u' trap ? Would this impede the water flow ?
