I have a Silavent DVF301 20W extractor fan that has packed up.

The bathroom is about 4 or 5 metres from the outside wall. The current fan comes on with the light pull and has a separate isolation switch outside the bathroom.

Obviously I am not looking to replace the ducting just the fan. Is this something I can do myself (I am ok at basic DIY stuff) and what sort of fan would anyone suggest. Needless to say I am not looking to spend a fortune.

Replacing a fan is an easy job.

The longer the duct run then the more powerful a fan you'll need to push the steamy, smelly air out.

There are lots to choose from and you get what you pay for. Cheap fans are only good for 3metre max duct length.

It may be best to replace the existing with the same (or equivalent) from the same maker. At least some of the mounting holes and the size of fan should be (may be ) the same.
