I know, I know. The answer should be just don't do it
.
But it appears a previous owner has and it lasted fine until I drilled a big hole in it that I'd like to patch.

The long story is, we live in a 60s terrace, at some point the lounge and dining room seem to have been knocked together, with a beam below ceiling height to hold up the bedroom wall above.

Recently, we had a pest problem and thought we could hear scratching inside what I assumed would be boxing in around a steel I beam. So I got my hole saw out and drilled a 50mm hole to see if I could see any droppings and put some poison in.

Turned out it wasn't an I beam. It was a pair of timber joists. Luckily I drilled near the end and fairly near the middle vertically. To restore the structural strength I've plugged it with a timber plug glued in with gap filliing structural epoxy.

But now I need to finish it. The plaster-like covering over the timber is white and about 3mm thick. Any idea what I can use to fill the remaining hole with that won't immediately crack?
