Skim the board before plastering?

Hello

I'm wondering whether you would skim the plasterboard/backerboard before tiling?

I have an ensuite which has Marmox muiltiboard in the wet areas and moisture resistant plasterboard elsewhere. The room will be part tiled/part plastered.

My builder (who won't be doing the tiling) has suggested skimming the entire room first so that should it ever need re-tiling, it won't tear the boards off. (I've had to start this room from scratch for that reason.) However, I know that putting a skim on reduces the maximum hold strength.

The tile I plan to use is 18kg per sq. m. (600mm x 200m x 8mm). I've read that tiling direct on to plasterboard holds 30kg while on to skimmed plasterboard reduces it to 20kg. Marmox say their boards hold 100kg and although unlikely to be a problem, it does void the warranty.

I doubt I'll ever be undertaking a re-fit so it will likely be the next owner's problem, but famous last words... Any thoughts? Thanks.

You could mask just inside where tiles are then skim walls. Pull masking where tile backer is.

I guess you could skim the lot then use tile primer but I'd rather have tiles stuck to tile backer board.

As for plasterboard it's normally gets wrecked when tiles are removed

Thanks. Will have to be very precise. The tiles will have tile trim. So don't tile first, then plaster up to the trim?

It does, and don't forget you've to add the weight of the adhesive and grout to that tile.

If it can be avoided, it's always best to avoid tiling onto a skim. Wayners is 100% correct - deffo tile direct onto the board. It's a no brainer

Yes, that makes sense, the backerboard is begging for tiles. I'm a bit worried that if I mask first, skim, then tile, and it's a millimetre out, it'll all go horribly wrong. What about tiling first (with trim), then plaster up to the trim. Would that look/be odd?
