Word autocorrects to provide the accent for you, I discover. Otherwise, insert the character as a symbol.

Personally have got accents by using some key shortcuts in Word as you type
e.g.
é = <CTRL><’><e>
è = <CTRL><`><e>
ê = <SHIFT><CTRL><^><e>
ç = <CTRL><,><c>

Where the <> denotes a key

You're quite right; however I'm getting on a bit now and forget all the shortcuts I don't use very often, so I have to get things done the long way.
