Hi everyone,

Can you get a type of ogre/torus beading that can go on top of a plain square skirting board to make it more ornate, rather than replace the skirting boards? We require it for a staircase & hallway.

Thank you for your help.

Alot of shops stock a range of mouldings so it's worth a look around. In my experience, the problem is how you end up attaching the moulding to the skirting or wall (unless it's just quadrant) because these mouldings tend not to be flat edged. If your walls are flat and even you may get away with it but it may just be easier to rip your old boring skirting off and put some new ogee or torus skirting in its place. The cost difference might not be as much as you think.

Matt - what does look effective on top of plain skirting is 'staff bead' - a type of softwood moulding used on sash windows. It has 2 adjacent flat edges (forming a right-angle - for the wall & top of skirting) and a bull-nose sitting over a rebate; as this stuff comes in very long lengths from timber merchants (not the DIY sheds) it's very convenient for capping skirting without joins. Cut to size, mitre corners, prime before fixing, panel pins to fix (no glue), under-coat then finish coat.
