Hi,

I have some decorators in and they have painted the walls (in brown) fine and have just started on the skirting and architraves (eggshell white).

I am a little worried as their first coat on the skirting boards clearly scuffs onto the wall and in some places is painted onto the wall (a few mm).

Should i be worried or is this a technique and that they will likely put it right by repainting the wall where the white eggshell paint has gone on it?

Or should i stop them before they do the whole house skirting and architrave like that?????

Overlapping is a problem for the best of decorators, hopefully they will make good with the (Brown  ) at the end of the job.

Overlapping is a good way to ensure there is a nice seal on any slight cracking where wood and wall meet, as said touching up or even doing the second coat on the wall last will be fine.

I would be a trifle concerned at this point, simply because a professional decorator shouldn't be leaving scuff marks or overlaps in between coats unless there is a good technical reason for it. It's a bit sloppy imho. I wouldn't want to wait until the whole job was finished before raising the subject, either.

Just say to them in a friendly, non-accusatory way: 'It's looking good. But how will you get a neat join between the skirting board and the wall? I've always wondered!'.

Hopefully they will tell you and stress what a specialist technique it is and what a steady hand you need, etc. But if they look at you in a baffled sort of way and say 'Wotcha on about? That's it', you need to start worrying.
