skybox f3

i know someone who has purchased a skybox f3 and to cut a long story short he today showed me the channels it was able to pick up.
All the sky sports and movies channels etc were available, he has paid for the box and one years subscription.
Is this an illegal service and how does it work?
An idiots guide to these things would be good if anyone knows about them.

Its a basic box that gives you access to the freesat channels.

You can also 'for a subscription' gain access to the other sky channels.

Far better I'd have thought to get one of the top end Sky+ boxes.

Unless he's paying his subscription to BskyB it is illegal.
If that's the case, it won't be long before BskyB makes changes to disable it so any money paid in advance will be at risk.

There's no clue at all regarding TO WHOM he is paying the subscription - hence my helpful reply.

There have been (and still are )many companies setting up "Sky subscriptions" (especially Spain and Ireland) who are not authorised to do so by BskyB.

By the way, I have read that the F3 was especially unreliable and has been replaced by the F5.
