Hi folks, didn't know if building or roofing or Gardens was the right forum... but here goes.

I'm building a log store in the garden, and putting a pitched slate roof on it - making it a bit of a feature in the garden rather than being a boring box - and I acquired a lot of slate for cheap. I've got four corner posts in concrete (100x100mm) and a frame screwed on round the top of the posts (45x100mm). See first pic:

I'm realising that a slate roof will be heavy and haven't figured out how much support that top frame will need. I'm thinking about adding a couple of extra posts along the 3m length, and a couple of diagonals at the corners - see blue in the second picture:

Any thoughts on whether that should be sufficient support?

Good idea. I bought some M8 x 100mm bolts. That should do the trick I hope. Might use a middle post too.

Hard to know whether that's just scraping by, or way over engineered (which I doubt).

I think 6" x 6" posts could have been better.....I guess you could plant on alongside so long as they touched the concrete.
John :)

Ok .. beams doubled up and they're much firmer when I hang my weight on them. I'll combine with some diagonals, and perhaps additional posts. I'll share my results!

Thanks, John, for the input too.
