slope of guttering

Hey there guys,
i am a windowcleaner and just wonderd how the slope of guttering is achieved. We are constantly being asked to "clear out" gutterings by our customers, when we get up to look the problem , 6/10 times is that the guttering is sloping away from the downpipe ......the water would have to flow uphill to get to the downpipe i just wondered if there was a foolproof way of getting the slope right...we see so many it cant just be laziness ...can it

Sometime, some people just fit gutter dead level thinking the rainwater will run away eventfully ! Another reason is not enough gutter bracket so the gutter bow in the middle. Should normally a fall of 1:40 ratio.

I personally say 1in 40 was too much fall and that a somewhere between 1in 100 to 1in 250 was about right The best way to set it out is work out your fall for the span you have so say 5m span at 1in100 the your fall will be 50mm fix your bracket as high as possible on the high end of you fascia and then set your bracket at the lower end 50mm down from this, then set up a string line between the two and when fitting your intermediate brackets make sure they are just touching the stringline as Masona says make sure you have enough brackets 1 at least every metre

Surprisingly, most conservatory roof especially those in Edwardian,Gable,or Georgian design sit on a ring beam & even the manufacturer design it so. (Ultraframe & others)
The gutter is fixed on a ring beam & guess what?

The ring beam have to be level all the way round so the water is constantly stagnant in the gutter. Since conservatory gutter are fixed as part of the eaves detail, even if DIY wants to correct the problem, it can not do so or if you do, guarantee on the conservatory go out of the window.

In this country, mosquitoes are breeding and we seems to have more & more.
Stagnant water gives good ground for moiquitoes to breed & their life cycle is only 16 days from eggs to adults, then another 400 eggs could be laid. Have anyone suffer or see some one suffer Dengue or Malaria?

The authority should do something about the gutter problem, most of us do not climb up the 2.5-3.0m gutter above ground level so we ignore the risk until one day we suffer from a tropic disease.

Water flow down & this is nature, let it flow down.

Re-adjust the gutter without them knowing and they will never know, if they do come round then blame them for bad workmanship

Yes it can, and also down to not knowning that it's wrong since the "builders" installing the gutters won't be experienced but cheap labour.

On conservatories it doesn't matter too much about level gutters since water will always find the lowest point - the down pipe and it's never that far away. You try filling a tank with a level bottom and a hole in the the bottom. Water will only stagnent in the gutter if it flows away from the down pipe. Any stagnation in a conservatory gutter will be small and will quickly evaporate.
