Do you have an outside light with a PIR spurred off the ring?
.

Not on this circuit.

What does the clamp read when you've disconnected everything?

It shows zero amps but any trickle under 0.1A wont show on the meter due to the range - it's only a cheap meter. Why what you thinking?

wondering if there's something on the ring that you either don't know about, or have forgotten about, which may be faulty.

We have been going through various scenarios and think we may have a lead. This problem started to escalate when the weather went cold and we turned the heating temp of the radiators up.

This points to our kitchen extension we had done earlier this year. We noticed when laying the carpet and lifted the door divider to find a radiator pipe and kitchen sockets cable running parallel against each other!! Will be gone for quite a while to investigate if the cable is damaged or being interfered with.

Cheers slippyr4, its been good rebounding ideas off you. :D

Will update later after i've checked it out.

That's definately a no-no. Most PVC cable is rated at 70 degrees C, and a CH flow pipe could easily be 80.

The heat itself isn't going to cause your MCB to trip - more likely the heat has damaged the insulation. You may need to replace the cable.

My thinking to.

Starting to sound like a bit of a rewire.

If I am BTW where do I stand with Part P. (bearing in mind that this cable has red and black cores)

You are allowed to replace a damaged cable for a single circuit only, anywhere in the house without notification.

If you can't get hold of red/black cable, use brown/blue and put a warning sticker on the CU:

NO!!!! I'm not a t****r.
Calm down - I was only asking

Well I am asking advice and was not too impressed by your sarcastic response - hence my reply.
I know that you were asking for advice, and my reply contained no implied or direct sarcasm, just a genuine and straightforward question. I'm not a sarcastic person, although, like everyone, I do slip up occasionally.

I don't know why you felt so strongly about it  , but that's your problem I'm afraid.
