Normally the five wires would be on a connector block under a plate on the bottom of the hob. If I remember correctly there are two blue (or black) two reds (or brown) and one earth.
The mains lead connects to the earth, one of the reds and one of the blues. There should also be connector plates between the reds and another between the blues. Hope this makes sense.
If you could post again with a detailed description of what you've got might be able to help a little better.

Unplug your appliance before working on it.

Just bought one too, same confusion!

Is the joining plates for three phase, or do you need them for 220v too?

Can you post a pic of the terminals and any wiring instructions that came with the appliance Mick ? Might be better to post on the uk electrics forum rather than on this one.

I'll post on there tomoz if it looks odd to you. Live & Neutral probably ok but the links?

I take it you are in the UK mick. And have a single phase ,230 v supply ?
Those bits of wire are of no real use if you are. Can you open up the cover ,and take pic of the terminal block please. Was there any pieces of copper ,for bridging terminals , may be in the terminal block ?
I assume no cable was supplied and you have to buy it. Would be three core 4mm sq and of the specification in the manual.
What is the kilowatt rating of the hob ,and what circuit do you intend to connect it to ?

Hi, yes in UK. There are a couple more brass connectors in the pack but not fitted. I have various sizes of cable so that's no issue. It's a 6kw hob

The extra 20 mm of green/yellow ( not shown in sketch ) is to ensure that if the cable is torn out of the connector ( e.g. when the appliance is moved ) then the case remains Earthed until after the Live is disconnected ( torn ) from the appliance

So the wiring diagram (on the first picture you posted of installation instructions ) that you should follow ,is the top right hand one , 220 / 240 v.
The supply cable neutral goes to terminal 4/5 which are both linked to each other by the copper link ( or is it brass ).the supply live conductor goes to terminal 1 and you fit two links across terminals 1,2,and 3 ,effectively joining all together ( or put another way link 1 and 2 then 2 and 3 ,with supply live conductor in terminal 1 also). The earth conductor goes to the earth terminal ,and it needs to be longer than the other conductors ( in case the supply cable is " tugged " on and live neutrals become detached ,the earth conductor has a better chance of still being in its terminal ).
You did not respond to my question regarding what circuit you are gonna connect to ,so i hope you are aware that you cant connect to a plug !! It draws a lot of current.
Finally ,the warning notices are a bit odd
