It started with me getting an E8 fault code which I managed to clear by cleaning out the diverter valve. However I am getting an E2 code intermittently and when I do not get the code water is leaking form the three air holes in the right hand water jacket after which the dishwasher seems to hang up and just hums but does nothing. Anybody any ideas?

E2 signals intervention of the flood protection device. Water on the base-plate may be caused by a blocked matrix/pressure chamber. Maybe best to remove the whole thing & give it a good clean.
To confirm the above lean the machine over, let the water run off the base-plate & try a re-start.

The E2 fault is happening because the water is coming out of the air vents in the right hand side water jacket. If I soak up this and prevent the float switch tripping the dishwasher starts filling and then just seems to hang up and hum. It doesn't seem to want to go through the cycle so I am at a loss as to what the problem is.

If you have overridden the flood protection device, the machine fills then "just hums" it sounds like you have two problems....a leak & a faulty wash motor. The latter could be caused by a defective motor, a jammed impellor, or a faulty capacitor (I would suspect one of the last two).

I will have a look at the impeller tonight. Is there any reason why water would be coming out of the air vents on the right hand water jacket???

Not familiar with the nooks & crannies of Smeg water-works but on other makes it usually boils down to a blockage in the matrix/pressure chamber or transfer hose. If they look grotty give them a good clean.
