smell from bathroom

we moved into a new house in july, there is a smell coming from the overflow from the sinks.
we contacted the builders they said we had dirgo valves fitted so there should be no smell, but there is and quite strong. I have blocked the overflows up so the room does'nt smell
We don't have a soil stack with a vent anywhere, should we have one ?
I,m afraid I can't trust what the builders are telling me.
Can anyone out there please help.

If its a new build get the builder back, Dugo could be U/S

new build propertys generally have internal soil stacks to stop you seeing a unsightly thick pipe being stuck to the side or the back of your house, have any of your neighbours had the same problem??? if so it could be a problem with the drains i find dirgo valves not much use as heard of quiet a few not working correctly, i'd get back on to the builders if your still not happy contact the building inspector

thanks for replying, we are not on the mains sewer system but have a septic tank, if that would make any difference.
On occations we have foam coming from around the edges of the tank cover in the garden and get a bad smell from that.
We have a motor that provides air that is pumped in the septic tank to help the breakdown process, I,m sorry but as you can see my knowledge on drains is somewhat limited.
On buying the house we were told by the builders never to turn the pump off, after a period of two months I found that the pump had never been turned on in the first place , I turned it on and now the water I can see from lifting the cover is bubbling away from the air that is being pumped in.
