Hey guys,

I bought some mains smoke alarms, and i was planning on wiring into the lighting circuit, but the instructions specifically say not to put them on the same circuit as florescent lights.
thanks to energy savers all of my lighting is now florescent.
I don't want to just do it anyway, but is there that big a difference wiring into a circuit with fluorescents and a separate circuit on the same cu as florescent lights? I don't really get why its an issue on the same circuit but fine in the same house.

anyway, in order to link the upstairs and downstairs alarms, the easiest route would be inside a box-in for bathroom plumbing. I know there is already a shower cable run in there, but looking at how it goes in and out i'm pretty doubtful its secured to anything for two stories, if i put the fire alarm wire in here can it just dangle around inside? i feel the need to clip it to something, but the shower wire got me wondering if it was acceptable.
so, do wires need secured for vertical runs? if it was run in conduit there is no real support for the length?

thanks.

Are you sure that is not 'near' to flurourscent lights?

What is the make and model of your system?

Aico Smoke Alarm - Ei166RC - Optical

Page 10 of Installer Instructions - Section 3.1

Locate unit al least 1.5m and route wiring at least 1m away from florescent light fittings as electrical "noise" and/or flickering may affect the unit. Do not wire into the sam circuit as florescent lights or dimmers.

I'm also sure that somewhere in their manual is that failure to follow these instructions will invalidate any guarantee.
These instructions give you no other option than to wire it direct to an MCB at the consumer unit.
The alternative is to go for an ionisation unit which doesn't appear to have these restrictions.
