Help! We have quite recently had new neighbours move in next door to us. We live in a semi and they are attached to our house. They are Turkish and smoke very strong cigarettes. Unfortunately the smoke is somehow coming in through the wall into my 7yr old daughters bedroom. I have no idea how it is coming in, we've not had this problem before! I have bought an air purifier which helps but other than that I am at a loss as to what to do. Any ideas?

The walls are (presumably) plastered where they are on show; but above the ceiling and below the floor there may well be gaps and open cracks that have not been filled. You can clean these out and fill with mortar (it will also reduce sound transmission) or expanding plastic foam (which is very messy).

If there are old fireplaces then the wall between them may only be half a brick thick and cracks are quite common on the chimney wall.

We live in a semi - my husband has been up in the loft and checked it out, apparently there was no smell of smoke up there at all.

look for cracks in the wall under the floor.

Or at a chimneybreast/fireplace

How old is your daughter? She blames the smell of cigarettes on the neighbours?
