I have just had my exhaust replaced on my peugot boxer, its on a p reg, it has started blowing out black smoke and there is a horrible smell. I took it back today to a different place but same company to have the exhaust checked, i thought they may have put the wrong one on.
He said it is the right exhaust and the problem may be a diesel problem, maybe the pump. I don't know anything about cars and vans so any help will be appreciated, cheers. just to add once its stable it feels like it is gonna stall but it doesnt. cheers

the exhaust had been blowing for a week or so then last friday it started shaking once i stopped, the engine seemed to shake. so it was time to get it fixed but since its been fixed its blowing black smoke it seems like its gonna stall. I had a problem last year with it drawing air in this was due to a split pipe and the symptoms once its stationary are similar but without the stalling. Could the change of exhaust cause this, im driving 80 miles a day to work and back and a there is a smell every now and again. cheers for your reply.

if your air filter is clean i would look at the egr system next, maybe its been disturbed with the new exhaust fitment or just sooted up and in need of a good clean

cheers ch427, nice one, could you give us an idea where to find the air filter and the egr system is, i know its nearly imposible to teach me mechanics on a forum but if you give us a clue i could look tomorrow and get back to you thanks for all your help.

im sorry but im not familiar myself with locations on this engine but the air filter will be housed in a black plastic box probably near the front of the engine,as for the egr valve etc this is a bit of a specialist job,a lot of people blank them off if they are not controlled by the engine management, the valve allows exhaust gasses to be dumped back into the inlet manifold to be re burnt,in time this cokes everything up

I had the air filter off before i left work today, oil was leaking out of the housing, cleaned it all and put it back together. The problem was the same all the way home but i thought that might be the exess oil i couldnt get at, appart from the shaking stopping the smoke was the same. Ive just checked it and oil is leaking so i think i may have found the problem. Should oil be going through this unit and if not what is going on , cheers for all your info upto now. im gonna take it appart in a minute and see if i can see whats happening, any more advise would be great, cheers.

cheers for all your help, i took it to a mechanic who had a quick look and said i might have put too much oil in because the smoke was black and not blue, he advised me to drain the oil and change the oil filter and air filter well ive done it and its still the same the oil is still getting through. im gonna try and post some pics and see if you can give me any other ideas
what is this and should oil be getting in it
should oil be getting in here?
the oil is coming out of here.
this is where the oil ends up the part that fits in has a hole in it which way should the hole face?.
ive cleaned it completly but its still smoking is this looking like a big job

blue smoke is oil burning, black smoke is too much fuel or not enough clean air to the engine, that part looks like something to do with the crankcase breather system to me,personally i think your looking in the wrong area

cheers, when i took it back to a exhaust place they said it might be a diesal fuel problem so makes sense. should oil be getting to these parts?
so where do i look next? cheers

just thought id bump my post. ;)
still the same problem black smoke grrrrrrrrrrrrr
any ideas, what could i look at?

If the breather pipes are blocked, that won't be helping things.
Change fuel and air filters, and see if it helps.
