smooth walls required - best way?

hi

removing existing tiles in kitchen before new kitchen install. Wife wants not as many tiles in new kitchen, prefers a painted finish.

Removing tiles has damaged plasterboard revealing the blockwork in places.

Best way to a smooth surface ??

Cut away damaged board and apply hardwall to blocks to get level with existing board which is dot & dabbed to blocks then skim the whole lot?

or

Cut away damaged board, patch in new board and then skim the lot to provide smooth surface to paint?

Remove the whole lot and start again.
Keeping the base surface you are plastering to, will help prevent any cracks appearing do to the fact the base surface is of the same type of material and will move, shrink, cure etc.. at the same rate/time. Using two different base surfaces can cause a difference in the above.
New kitchen start from scratch, it is also likely while removing the tiles that the rest of the boards have worked loose, or are loose due to the location of wall adhesive now being compromised by removing sections.
Best advice start again!
