Hi Guys

Can someone tell me what are the better lights to use when installing about 36 lights within the sofits.

Many thanks

Depends on how much light you want. If you are talking about recessed spots then us IP rated GU10 ones and either fit CFL or LED lamps otherwise they will cost you a fortune to run.

I've used LED in the past and have had no complaints at all..

Better in what respect? In terms of power consumption you should consider using LED lamps and fittings, if you were to run 36 x 20w halogen lamps or similar then you'd have a huge electricity bill before long.

With regard to ease of installation, a single low voltage transformer might be the easiest way to go if using LED lamps. Voltage drop in the wiring will be minimal thanks to their low current consumption, and you'll only need 2 core cable looped in and out of each fitting.

The LED lamps that I have used are a direct replacement for the GU10 and need no transformer or control pack (all built in to the lamp) they do however cost about £4.50 each, but they only use 1.2w energy so they should pay you back within a reasonable time frame.

As for the cable you should really provide an earth even if it is not going to be used.

The cost of the lights isnt to much of a prob,, which ones did you have & where did you get them ?

Thanks

Useful if anyone ever wants to change to mains lights, but certainly not a requirement for SELV.

I got the fttings from a local wholesaler and ended up getting the lamps from B&Q, but there are many places you can get them, just have a look around.

Electronics

As I said in my previous post, the LED lamp are a direct replacement for the GU10 lamp and are not SELV

Apologies - you were referring to GU10s, I was referring to MR16s - both of which are available as LED types.

Thanks for all your help guy's.
What IP rating light do i need to get?

Thanks again

Be aware that a lot of soffits are made from Asbestos.Safety considerations needed.

If made of wood then you need to fit lights suitable for mounting in combustable material ( 'F' in a triangle IIRC )

Thanks ricicle

Not sure what you ment by ( 'F' in a triangle IIRC ) ?
Think it will be pvc.
