Occasionally we got a drain smell in the house. The soil pipe is completely internal, boxed in with an air inlet valve. I was advised to change it and the occurence was much less frequent. We've almost completed a bathroom re-furb, only the basin to go. The waste has a plastic bag taped over it. Whenever the other bathroom is used, mainly the basin and shower, the drain smell comes back as bad as ever. Although obviously the basin with a water trap will improve the situation I'm worried that it won't and I have a serious problem. The waste has not been disturbed during the work, otherwise we'd have the smell all the time. I could replace the AIV again for a better one (are there any recommended). or route the internal soil externally through the wall whith a standard outlet on top. Advice deperately needed.

It could be that you have had an AAV fitted to your soil pipe when in fact it should be vented to outside air.

I would suggest you re route it so that it is external and is letting gases out. Building Control would be able to give you a more accurate answer after inspection though. :D
