Hello.

In building an extension, the soil stack which was previously external, is now going to be internal, i.e. penetrating the roof of the extension.

I would like to know if there are any regulations regarding this and what the best way to box the soil stack in would be.

Any advice on detailing of the roof penetration, floor penetration or sub floor treatment of the pipe would be welcome.

Thanks!

Hi. Soil and waste will comply with Building Regs. this will be apparent on the drawings submitted / passed. When passing through roof, flat or pitch do not make the mistake of fitting the pipe and associated branches etc that may be above this point, and then being puzzled on how to weather it. Purchase a lead slate of the correct pipe size and roof pitch and fit as you progress the pipe work. If you fail to do this the cost associated with having it welded on site may be prohibitive. As for boxing in, make ladders from 50 mm Sq timber width and height depend on your situation and then simply screw to wall/walls around pipe and cover with plaster board or alike. Good Luck

Thanks for the responses.

Yes it is a single storey ext, the soil stack sits in the corner of the proposed room on plan.

how is it best to weatherproof the roof penetration, i.e. lead flashing or a sort of sleeve system which will fit over the pipe and tiles?

also the penetration with the floor, how is this generally dealt with?

thanks again

Hi If the drainage pipe work is existing cut off say 300 mm above proposed slab level. ( You Can cut it down lower if required depending on material Eg. cast iron, plastic etc.) You may need an adapter to connect dissimilar pipes? Providing the joints are sound away you go. Note if you come across drains when constructing footings the pipe must be protected from load by fitting lintels on both skins of brick / block work. You can also water test drain prior to construction. (Plug in appropriate drain at manhole, fill pipe with water check for any water level drop once settled. As for thye weathering through roof standard lead slate and plastic weathering collar will do the trick. Get pipe size and roof pitch and check out link. Good Luck
