Solder joints, im quite happy to solder bends onto new pipe however when your working on an old pipe thats had water in it never works. As you can never drain every drip of water out of the pipes, when you try to solder the water is drawn to the heat and the solder will not run as the pipe doesn't get hot enough. Whats the trick other then using a compression gland / plastic push fit.

A water-vac. Sucks them dry. Eg at Wickes for about £30.
Also, if you get the wet pipe red hot 6" upstream of your joint, it'll boil away the odd drip for the 2 seconds you need.
