Ah, the Croy tattie munchers!! A fine band of people. I hear someone has had a bath installed in Croy now!!
 
Getting back to the original question after that pyromaniac interlude...

You can protect joists very adequately by covering them with about 8 layers of kitchen foil. Even if the top couple of layers melt there's no sign of burning on the timber. It's particularly good for 'moulding' into awkward corners.

It never fails to amaze me the amount of time wasting sh.te that's posted on here, clearly by DaftyDIY'ers & CC/CCCs with too much time on their hands!!!
