i was going to solder a joint in some pipework but it is only about 12" from the stop tap, would it be safe to heat the pipe so near to something that has a rubber washer inside ?

If you are worried then why not just use a compression fitting instead ,or take the pipe off from the stop tape solder everything and then put it back in

Thanks, that should have been quite obvious really, how far away from the tap would you think it would be safe to heat the pipe?

12 " is fine ...I`d go to 6" with a soaking wet rag round the cock
