I've got a 1950's semi, not built to money-no-object standards, and it has solid floors downstairs with parquet.

I know there's only one way to be sure, but what is likely to be the makeup of the concrete slab? I'm wondering if it would be feasible to cut a 30-40mm deep channel in it to lay cables....

there is unlikely to be a damp proof membrane below the slab.

hard core, yes. this may even be red ash!

you will probably need mechanical (dusty) assistance in order to "cut a channel" into the slab.

i would be inclined to break out a complete trough near the edge (skirting).
