Is it possible to lay solid wood or engineered flooring without glue and just allow to float? What would the consequences be?

It's possible, but any normal shrinkage during the seasons will show in gaps appearing between the rows. If you're happy with that, no problem.

If you don't want to glue the board because you're thinking about moving the floor with you when you move house, you might find that some of the T&G's will damage when the floor is lifted.
