Our bath taps needed replacing and we were attempting to access them from the room next door (long story . . ) only to find that the wall has breeze blocks in it.

We now need to fill the hole we cut in to the wall. I am a complete novice and so would be grateful for advice on how best to do this.

Cut out a piece of PB that size and glue it in place with either drywall adhesive or Gripfill or equivalent.

assuming the wall is battened and p/boarded?

just cut a few blocks of timber and screw them to the plasterboard(make sure)you leave enough over hang for the new piece of p/board and screw that to the new blocks.

i'd go with fixing a piece of board into the hole with a form of adhesive like board adhesive or gripfill.

then use easifill to fill the gaps and sand to a smooth finish.

Two ways to do this it's a small patch so one coat plaster (not my fav. product) may be suitable for this application and can be sanded down if your plaster skills are not to good, or as already mentioned plasterboard fixed with wall adhesive and tape jointed with self adhesive tape and a coat of jointing compound such as easyfill, you can get something simular, that is ready mixed at most sheds. This too will need to be sanded down and replied three times to give it a good finish.
