Some basic advice

We are intending to re-plaster our living room walls as they are a bit uneven, they are currently covered in textured, painted wallpaper.
Additionally we would like to install a new fireplace surround - we currently have a brick surround.
I am thinking that this would be easier to try and do it all in one go, purely on the basis that there will be plastering work involved in doing the fireplace.
Stupid question though, is it best to strip the wallpaper off before re-plastering - I know you can plaster over tiles but what about wallpaper?
TIA for any advice,
Tony
