Some basic plastering help required

Evening folks. I have offered to help a friend do a small bit of plastering (about a square meter). I attended a half day course a while back and I managed fine with an area. I cannot for the life of me remember how you prep the wall and what the bag of plaster was called (bonding or finishing). If anyone could be kind enough to have a look at the picture and give me some advice I would very much appreciate it!

you need to scrape off all that excess tile adhesive ,PVA the surface area and then get a bag of thistle multi finish and off you go
