Some wires, 2 lights, 2 switches and a dark landing...

Hi there, i wonder if any of you clever chaps can help.
I have a landing with a light upstairs and a light downstairs. There is a switch upstairs and a switch upstairs and a switch downstairs. The switches should turn both lights on. If the lights are on, either switch should turn them off too.
I am trying to fit new switches which is a bit of a nightmare as i keep getting it wrong. I didn't take note of the wires before i removed the old ones.
The top switch has 2 fat grey wires. Both have a red and a black wire inside them. Downstairs I have just a red and a black.
My switches have L1, L2 & COM connectors. Somebody please TELL ME WHERE THEY GO! I know nothing about circuits as I didn't listen at school and my Mrs keeps falling down the stairs in the dark and will need a new hip by the time the ear is out. Please help me and indeed her.

Are the switches metal?

Are there any earth wires at the switches?
(bare copper conductor or sleeved green/yellow)

You should have looked what went where when you took the old switches off.

Your description of the lights isn't too good either. Do both lights work together? And you only have 1 switch upstairs and 1 downstairs? All 2-way switch circuits are wired differently, especially on stairwells.

You cannot swich one light two way let alone two lights two way with just a red anf a black at one end.

Top:
A red and black wire comes from 1 'fatter' wire and the other red and black comes from another.

Bottom:
