Thanks, to everyone offering suggestions!

I ran the MS fixit and that told me the audio was not set as default, so the fixit system changed it.

It did not work.

I added your stuff into the registry and it was accepted.

It did not work.

I think the only thing left for me to do is update the BIOS: would that make any difference?

Bit of a risky procedure, no?

If that doesn't work, I suspect the audio bit of the MB is goosed.

Unless the bios is corrupted, i doubt that will fix it, especially if it worked before.
What does it show under
My Computer ---> Properties ---> Hardware---> Device manager.

"Sound and Video Controler"

If there is no Exclamation or question Mark there ?

Maybe try
Under Sound, Video and game controllers highlight each device and press the delete key to remove the device
Then reboot

Just sounds to me that either sound is not running as a service or you have a faulty board or sound driver is not installed/corrupted.
Can you do a screen shot of that and of Services Start-(search service) open-screen print.

Thank you.

This is what comes up under Sound.

When you say delete, do you mean everything??

Not sure what you mean by a screenshot of the Services Start...?

No just audio. But do this first:

start-settings-control panel-administrator tools-services

make sure sound/audio (or what ever it is in xp) make sure it is running (started/auto)

Look here to see what i mean (only ignore the disable topic talked about)

Re the audio: I meant all of it that appears in the first screenshot under the heading sound video and game controllers up to system devices.

Here is the screenshot of services. I hope I've done this right...

Bottom right, you have a speak icon. Seems sound is installed fine, just turn it up, make sure speakers are plugged into the GREEN sound jack.

Download and install VLC player (free) that should install all codecs needed to play your movies.

Delete audio ones.
And in services last screen shot top left try clicking restart while highlighting the audio.
Has to be something silly if it worked before. Make sure you have the right driver etc from manufacturers web site etc

click speaker icon i see on task bar make sure that is all set up ok

Thanks. I have restarted the audio and checked the task bar icon. OK.

So you think it's worth deleting all the audio stuff?

And reinstalling?

yeah, let it reinstall after a reboot. sure it is something silly though.
Go to windows update too and make sure all software etc is upto date.
