Just got a quote for some of this Isomax stuff:
https://www.soundproofingstore.co.uk/isomax-clip-system

The system loses 133mm from the room, but promises to give superior sound-proofing.

It was a bit more than I expected, working out at about £300 for each (metre-wide) alcove either side of a chimney breast

I'm thinking the alternative is to pick up some studs from Wickes, some insulation and acoustic plasterboard to just make another wall. With 50mm cavity, 65mm studs and two layers of PB and acoustic sealant that must also be reducing the sound for less cash. I guess I don't have to skim it to figure out if it's doing the job, but it's still not something I'd want to do twice.

Does anyone have any experience of the above product, or indeed doing sound-proofing on the cheap by other methods?

thanks,
S.

If you can have nothing connected to the existing wall, i.e. by building a stud wall with an air gap behind it, that will perform better than something that fixes to the wall, e.g. those clips or resilient bars. They are useful when you have less space.

I’d say you don’t need the gap to be as large as 50mm; maybe 25mm, and you should put some acoustic mineral wool between the studs.
