Spindle Leak - plastic valve

Hi all,

When turning the thermostatic valve back on it was a bit stiff and loosened the nut so I tightened it back up but now water is seeping from arround the valve spindle. Took the thermostatic valve off expecting a brass nut to tighten but it's plastic, the middle bit turns and is numbered 1-6. What do I do? If I turn it slightly either way it makes the leak worse.

Forgot to mention I cleaned the spindle up and worked it up and down but it's not helped.

Not a lot you can do - that isn't a gland type valve rather there's O-Rings in there, once they start to leak they're worn/damaged so it's either replace the O-rings but chance are you won't actually be able to find replacements, or replace the valve.

Ok thanks. How do I replace the valve does the whole system need draining? It's a combi boiler which is upstairs along with this radiator and the only drain port is downstairs.

No. Isolate both valves, then open bleed vent to make sure they’re isolated, should stop trickling. Ideally you want a stop end to plug the radiator tail whilst you change the valve. Open trv into a receptacle and this should stop, once this is done, change the valve and connect up. Open lockshield, fill system and vent if required.

Makes sense thanks. Which TRV would you go for from the ones listed here? They don't seem to say if they are gland type or O-Ring. Would prefer gland I think. The old one is a Drayton RT212 by the looks of it, I guess I should spend a bit more than that to get better quality?

Link doesn’t work (it’s screwfix no doubt?) Where I work we fit Terrier (Pegler) TRVs and don’t have many problems. Not sure what type they are.
