Spindle won't go in straight

I've been replacing the window handles in my flat and doing the last couple this afternoon but the spindle hole inside one frame is offset. (Instead of being square to the window-frame it's tilted to the side so it's more like a diamond shape.) Whoever put the window in originally, put the spindle into the old handle at an angle to compensate for this but I can't do that with the replacement as the selection of new spindles have little plastic cams on that mean I 'have' to put them in at a 45 degree angle. When I put the handle in the frame it won't line up with the screw holes and I can't figure out how to adjust the mechanism so that the square hole sits straight. I've tried putting a square headed screwdriver in the hole and turning it but it won't turn without the old handle in. (The old handle actually works okay but it now doesn't match all the new ones!!)
Will I have to completely take the locking mechanism apart to adjust this?
