Hi -- very quick question about splicing joists. I've cut out rotten sections and I've got angle irons / splice plates to attach the new, treated sections; because the damaged joists are next to the wall, there's no room to hammer screws in to attach the plates on the wall-side. Is it ok to use short timber screws there? -- I can use the right angle attachment for the electric drill to get to them that way.

I can't see any other way of attaching the plate without detaching the joist from the beam, which would be *very* fiddly in this instance for reasons too boring to go into. Any help would be very much appreciated!
