Spray painting wooden chairs

I've got some pine kitchen chairs which currently have a light natural varnish on them. I want to spray paint them but am wondering if someone can advise me: is it best to use a can of spray paint or instead buy or hire a spray gun and use normal wood paint?

I'd really appreciate any advice.

what ever way you go, go will need to ensure you have removed all the old varnish, or the paint wont stick.
