Please ber with me on this one, i had a bloke come round and spray painted the front and back of my house, which is an end of terrace, i did not have enough money's at time to have the side done, but he offered to do the side at a later date at an agreed price, over this period he had some cheap paint which he made me an offer which i bought, then we set a date for the painting to be started /completed.

its been over a year with excuses etc and i just want it completed, i'm not a bad diy - er and i'm deciding to do it by self with a little help, for my summer project lol.

my question is the paint he used which i have, which is called andura xp 20 litre drums (apparently one of the top of the range coatings) enough for the job, due to that he used a professional spray gun to put the proffessional paint on, can this paint be painted on by roller / brush as well ? or do you have to spray it on ?

No it has to be applied by high pressure spray...and impossible to tell if its enouigh for the job..how big is the job?????????

I have 5 andura xp 20 litre drums , and its an end of terrace with the front and back already completed, with just the side left to do from the ground to the first floor level to where the roofing starts, i believe that will be enough i hope ?

What you have works out to about 20 gallons...which is normally more than enough for a gable end...however there are a lot of variables

The surface...previously painted or not?

The texture of it..rough or smooth

The method of application...this stuff cant be brushed or rolled

The weather..hot days mean it wont go as far

And the main one...the size of the wall.

The stuff you have is a high build coating, about 3 or times thats thicker than ordinary masonry paint.

It has hydrocarbons in it...which suggest its solvent based...not nice to apply on a hot day and not for the DIYer...

Its a good product and most of those paints come with a 15 odd tear guarentee...which is only valid if you use the system they recommend..ive seen those 'special' paints put over ordinary masonry paint and because the masonry paint wasnt very well adhered to the surface it has lifted becasue of the surface tension created by the special paint as it dried.

The guarentee was out the window!

If i were you id sell it on ebay and buy some ordinary masonry paint..most of the big names guarentee their product to some degree and id says its as good as the 'special' paint any day.

Thanks very much for that in depth explanation i understand now, i have just made a deal with a fellow who sprays wall coating for a living, (had to bite the bullet), and he is going to spray the wall for a reasonable price, (as i did not fancy it myself) thats if i prepare the wall, fill cracks, repair render, flaking paint which i have just completed as this was part of my original plan and get someone to paint it on ?

Once its all sorted he is going to spray the wall with a spray gun that he use's from his work, which reading from your post i think i have done the correct thing, and also i thought i would not need that much paint when the original builder offered it to me, you live and you learn, i think with the left overs i will sell on ebay to recoop some money back lol.

once again thanks for your very helpful post...

Dulux and Sandtex both have 15 year guarantees. Just sell the stuff. Those 'special' paints are always rubbish.

Agreed..and a lot of those 'special paints' are just a glorified pliolite based paint that all the majors produce a version of anyway
