spurting water from hot tap

in my kitchen the hot tap spurts water out from underneath the sink every time you touch it. the slightest of knocks will cause water to gush out underneath the sink. i've shut the service valve off, and i got a feeling it be a split fibre washer, because the water is not coming out from the actual tap itself but from somewhere underneath the sink. is this likely to be a tap connector washer gone? any help would be much appreciated.
