Try silicone spray rather than wd40.
Shouldnt have to take it apart - just spray and manipulate lid up and down to work the lubricant in.
 
thanks, that worked pretty good, will probably take a couple more tries. still think it's a bit of a naff design, must be some trick to release it if I need to replace the seat at any time, but I can't see anything obvious.
