I've just had a new gate put in and I'd like to stain it to protect it over the winter. I also know now's not exactly a great time to do so! Is it still possible to stain a fence as long as it stays above freezing and doesn't rain? I know it'll take longer to dry but is there any other reason why staining at this time might be a problem?

If it’s damp the stain will run and may peel off once dry .Ideally should have finish applied before hanging as you can’t coat all round when hung.

you might consider taking it off its hinges and bringing indoors for a day or two.

this will dry it out so it is easier to stain, and the joints will open up reducing the amount of bare wood showing in summer.

treat the top and the bottom extra-thoroughly.
