The wooden rails on an old style winchable clothes drying rack have snapped and fallen apart so I am charged with renewing them.

I have obtained the correct size lengths of timber to use, but I need to know what I should stain them with.

The original timbers are a dark oakey colour on oak but the only timber I can get hold of at the moment (and they're in a hurry for them to be fixed) in that size is pine so I need to colour them darker.

My question is what kind of stain can I use that will definitely not mark any wet/damp clothing which is hung on them? I have plenty of varnish for external furniture in varying colours, would that do?

most stain/varnish products would be ok mate but to be on the safe side i would colour the wood with a wood dye (maybe colron) and then use a clear varnish with 2-3 coats ;)
